Visitors – Yellow Card

This card is available to people who frequently visit a construction site, but have no construction specific skill and are not carrying out physical construction work.

A Site Visitor is a person who frequently visits construction sites, however, does not have any specific construction skills. For example, a delivery driver needs fast and easy access to any construction site, which requires a CSCS card. Another example is if you are an estate agent, developer or admin person who regularly visits construction sites in your job, you should hold a yellow card, and be aware of the health and safety rules. Having a Site Visitors’ card reduces time spent on site, as a card holder does not need to be given induction of specifics of the work on a construction site. However a Site Visitor must be accompanied at all times by another card holder at a higher level than a visitor card.

Site Visitors are employed to perform a variety of jobs:

  • Delivering goods to the construction sites;
  • Some estate agents may need it and project managers, that have no construction qualifications;
  • Admin, I.T. and those who do not need access to a construction Site un-supervised.

Some of the work done by Site Visitors includes:

  • Admin work
  • Delivery drivers
  • Project office cleaners
  • Catering staff

In order to obtain a Site Visitors’ card, a person must have passed the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment test (£40+VAT) within the past two years.

Tests and training can be taken in our Centre in West London. You can book online directly with us.

Labourer – Green Card

The green Construction Site Operative (CSO) card was withdrawn on 1st July 2014. There is a new green CSCS card for people working in labouring occupations. If you work in a labouring occupation you can apply for the Labourer Card,  read more on how to apply for this card.

This can is valid for 5 years.

This card is for those persons working in the labouring occupations.  If you are working in this area of occupation you can apply for the Green Site Labourer Card.

A labourer does manual work that requires high physical strength and fitness to construct buildings or structures.

Labourers are employed to perform physical, manual work, for example digging trenches, laying foundations, building walls, plastering and fitting windows. The work is mainly done outdoors, which can often hinder progress being made on a job, and it is a very male dominated environment. It can sometimes be physically dangerous due to the nature of the job being done, thus safety precautions need to be adhered to. Work usually begins and finishes early, but this can be dictated by the amount of light available and so working hours can be fewer in the winter months.

Some of the work done by labourers includes:

  • concrete – shotcrete, gunite, grouting and steel forms
  • demolition – concrete cutting, pavement breaking, cutting torch, groundwork
  • environmental remediation and hazardous waste
  • fences and landscaping
  • hod carrier – block masonry, plasterers and fireproofing
  • paving – white paving formwork, traffic control, striping, signs
  • piping – water pipe, sewer and storm drain
  • field technology
  • tunnels – drilling and blasting dry utilities –
  • electrical conduit and communications conduit

You can apply for this card if you have:

  • Passed the CITB (HS&E) Operatives test (£40 + VAT)
  • and Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment (£125+ VAT).

Or

  • CITB (HS&E) Operatives test (£40 + VAT)
  • and CITB Approved (one-day) Health and Safety Awareness (£125+VAT).

Tests and training can be taken in our Centre in West London. You can book online directly with us.

Salary

The starting salary for an apprentice or novice labourer is around £15,000, although this depends on the demand for work. Once qualified, this usually rises to around £23,000, with more experienced labourers earning around £30,000.

Overtime, can greatly increase t, and some labourers become self-employed thus setting their own rate. However, if work is not possible due to the weather etc most labourers will not be paid for this; for this reason it is common to be paid by the hour or day rather than by a set salary.
